Hello Farley Families,

We hope everyone had a wonderful start to the new year. January was a busy and exciting month for us! We loved seeing the support for our PTA during the Popcorn Fundraiser. Thank you to everyone who contributed to making it a success.

We also hosted our building-level Spelling Bee last month. We are incredibly proud of every student who participated. It takes great courage to stand up and spell in front of an audience! A massive congratulations goes out to our building winner, Colton, for an outstanding performance.

We will be sending 6 exceptional students to compete in the District Bee. Please join us in wishing them luck!

As we move into February, our PBIS character trait focus is BRAVERY. Throughout the month, we will be encouraging students to take risks to better themselves and for our school community.

BackPack Program

In partnership with the Regional Food Bank, we host the BackPack Program. This service provides weekend bags of nutritious, kid-friendly food to ensure our students have consistent nourishment. We are dedicated to supporting all families in our school community who can benefit from this program. You can help us reach more families by spreading the word and by donating to our official fundraising page.

The Learning BEAT

4th Grade

ELA This February, fourth graders are becoming poets and authors! We’ll explore poetry by studying rhythm and imagery. Students will also finish their informational books using descriptive language. Finally, we’ll read stories about identity to discover meaningful messages.

Math Fourth grade mathematicians will dive into fractions! Students will learn to find equivalent fractions, compare different sizes, and add or subtract mixed numbers. We will also practice multiplying fractions by whole numbers and using line plots to display fraction measurements.

Social Studies Classes will dive into the American Revolution! We’ll explore the conflicting viewpoints of Patriots and Loyalists and investigate major battles fought in New York. Students will also research and model colonial occupations for an exciting STEM project!

Science Our scientists are finishing their Waves of Sound unit! Students will investigate how wavelengths create high and low sounds. They’ll also practice sending secret codes using patterns and use digital tools to visualize sound waves in action.

5th Grade

ELA Fifth graders will explore poetry, focusing on imagery and figurative language like metaphors. Students will also complete their European Explorer digital books and begin a unit on biographies, studying the lives of fascinating, influential people.

Math Mathematicians will dive into Volume and Area. Students will use unit cubes to fill three-dimensional shapes, discovering how to calculate volume using formulas like V = l × w × h. They will also solve real-world measurement problems.

Social Studies Fifth graders will investigate how geography and climate influence cultures across the Western Hemisphere. Students will explore regions like Mesoamerica and the Caribbean. To show their learning, they will research a country and create a travel brochure.

Science Our Chemical Reactions & Properties of Matter unit continues as students investigate chemical reactions. We will explore the particulate nature of matter and conduct experiments with acids and gases. Students will also learn about the conservation of matter through mystery investigations.

6th Grade

ELA Students are concluding their study of Mesopotamia and finalizing their informational nonfiction books. We are transitioning into a poetry unit, where students will analyze figurative language and structural elements to understand how poets express complex themes and emotions.

Math Students are mastering Rational Numbers, including absolute value and graphing on coordinate planes. We will also begin Expressions and Equations, learning to use variables to represent numbers and solve real-world problems through algebraic identities and one-step equations.

Social Studies We are wrapping up our exploration of Ancient River Valley Civilizations (Mesopotamia, Egypt, and China). Students will compare how geography shaped these unique cultures and examine how the Silk Road facilitated the exchange of inventions and ideas across the Eastern Hemisphere.

Science This month features an exciting look at Plate Tectonics. Students will construct Pangea models to explore continental drift and convection currents. We will also investigate Earthquakes and Volcanoes, focusing on seismic waves and using data to predict natural hazards.
